What’s in Wendy’s Chili? Ingredients, Calories & Facts (2026)

By the WendysMenu-Prices.online team  ·  Last updated: October 2026  ·  Checked against Wendy’s own chili page

About this guide: Calorie and protein figures come from Wendy’s own chili page (February 2026). The ingredient list comes from a regional Wendy’s site and a recipe site quoting Wendy’s US site. Fat and carb grams come from a third party nutrition database. Where something couldn’t be verified, we say so instead of guessing.

💡 Overview: What’s Actually in the Cup

Wendy’s chili is made from beef, a tomato based chili sauce, chili beans (pinto or pink beans plus red kidney beans), and a mix of onions, celery and green peppers, seasoned with salt, chili pepper, garlic and onion. Wendy’s itself describes it as its beef, “a hearty helping of vegetables” and chili beans.

A small is listed at 280 calories and 19 g of protein, a large at 370 calories and 25 g. The “made from leftover burgers” story has a real basis, and further down we separate what’s confirmed from what’s only reported.

Verdict: Is Wendy’s Chili a Smart Order?

A protein forward side, with a few things to check first

★ Solid Protein Pick
  • Best for: a warm, filling side or a light meal when you want protein without ordering a burger
  • Standout strength: 19 g of protein for 280 calories in a small, which works out to about 6.8 g per 100 calories
  • Check first: sodium isn’t confirmed for the current recipe, and older published figures were high
  • Skip if: you avoid beef, soy, or added flavor enhancers, or you need a certified gluten free or halal meal

Based on Wendy’s published figures from February 2026. For allergies or strict diets, check the nutrition calculator in the Wendy’s app. See the full Wendy’s Nutrition Guide for the rest of the menu.

Data note (October 2026). Search for this and you’ll find a small chili listed at 170, 240 or 250 calories, with sodium around 780 to 930 mg. Those are older figures and don’t match what Wendy’s lists today. We use the 280 and 370 calorie figures from Wendy’s own February 2026 chili page. We couldn’t confirm a current sodium number.

🌶️ The Ingredients, Decoded

Wendy’s keeps its own description short: its beef, a hearty helping of vegetables, and chili beans. The published ingredient statement breaks that down into the pieces below.

🥩 Ground Beef
🫘 Pinto / Pink Beans
🫘 Red Kidney Beans
🍅 Tomatoes & Paste
🧅 Onions
🌿 Celery
🫑 Green Peppers

Ingredient labels read like a chemistry exam, so here’s what each piece usually does in the pot. The right hand column is general food knowledge, not something Wendy’s has said about its own recipe.

Ingredient What it is / what it typically does
Ground beef Listed as just two things: beef and salt. This is the protein base.
Chili beans Pinto (or pink) beans and red kidney beans. Most of the fiber and a good share of the bulk.
Tomatoes, tomato paste The red base. The tomatoes are processed with calcium chloride, a firming agent that keeps the pieces from turning to mush.
Onions, celery, green peppers The “vegetables” Wendy’s mentions. They give the chili its texture and background flavor.
Water, sugar Liquid for the simmer, and a little sugar that typically balances the acidity of the tomatoes.
Salt, chili pepper, spices, garlic and onion powder The seasoning. Wendy’s doesn’t publish the spice blend or a heat level.
Modified corn starch, xanthan gum Thickeners that give the chili body so it stays spoonable instead of watery.
Flavor enhancer (dextrose, salt, yeast extract), disodium inosinate and guanylate Savory “umami” boosters. They make the chili taste more meaty and rounded than its ingredient count suggests.
Citric acid Adds a little tang and helps control acidity.
Soy lecithin An emulsifier, listed last. It matters if you have a soy allergy.

Ingredient statements can change. If an allergy or strict diet is involved, check the current list in the Wendy’s app or on Wendy’s allergen page rather than relying on any third-party summary, including this one.

🍔 Is It Really Made From Leftover Burgers?

The honest answer is “in some form, yes,” with several loose ends. The story goes back to founder Dave Thomas, who built Wendy’s on fresh, never frozen beef. Fresh beef doesn’t keep as long as frozen, so unsold patties were a builtin problem. In his 1992 book Dave’s Way, Thomas described how chili ended up on the menu by asking, “What do you do with the leftover hamburger?”

Here’s how the evidence sorts out:

✓ Confirmed by Wendy’s
The chili is made with Wendy’s beef, vegetables and chili beans. It’s sold in every US location, and about 83 million servings go out each year. Wendy’s own page doesn’t discuss leftover patties.
◐ Reported, Not Official
Thomas’s own account of chili as a way to use leftover hamburger. Media reports of employees describing unsold cooked patties being crumbled into the chili, and of a Wendy’s presentation showing the same. Some staff also say the beef isn’t always leftover patties.
? Not Confirmed
How long patties are held before use, what share of the chili beef is repurposed versus cooked fresh for it, and whether it varies by restaurant. Wendy’s hasn’t published those details, so any specific hold time you see online is unsourced.

What the reports describe is cooked beef patties only. Buns, cheese and toppings aren’t part of the story, and the ingredient statement lists the beef as beef and salt. Whether the practice bothers you is a personal call. It is, at least, a way of not throwing away good beef, which is the reason Thomas gave.

📊 Calories & Nutrition: Small vs. Large

Nutrient Small Large Source
Calories 280 370 Wendy’s
Protein 19 g 25 g Wendy’s
Total fat 12 g 17 g Third party database*
Carbohydrates 24 g 29 g Third party database*
Protein per 100 calories 6.8 g 6.8 g Calculated
Sodium Not confirmed for the current recipe —
Fiber Not confirmed for the current recipe —

*Fat and carbohydrate grams come from a third party nutrition database. They line up exactly with Wendy’s calorie and protein figures, but they aren’t from Wendy’s itself.

How much of your daily protein is that?

Measured against the 50 g Daily Value that appears on US nutrition labels:

Small chili: 19 g, about 38% of 50 g
Large chili: 25 g, about 50% of 50 g

Calculated from Wendy’s protein figures. Your own daily protein needs may be higher or lower than the label’s 50 g reference.

🔥 Where the Calories Come From

Multiply the grams by the standard calorie factors (9 per gram of fat, 4 per gram of carbohydrate or protein) and you get a rough picture of what powers each cup. It’s an approximation, since it leans on the third party fat and carb numbers and everything is rounded.

Small (280 cal)
■ Fat ≈39% (108 cal)   ■ Carbs ≈34% (96 cal)   ■ Protein ≈27% (76 cal)
Large (370 cal)
■ Fat ≈41% (153 cal)   ■ Carbs ≈31% (116 cal)   ■ Protein ≈27% (100 cal)

The protein share is the same in both sizes. The large just carries proportionally more fat, which is what you’d expect from a bigger scoop of beef.

⚠️ Who Should Read the Label Twice

If this applies to you What the published information shows
Soy allergy Soy lecithin appears in the ingredient list we found. Confirm against Wendy’s current allergen information.
Gluten sensitivity No wheat ingredient shows up in the list we found, but Wendy’s isn’t a gluten free kitchen, so cross contact is possible. See our Allergens guide.
Vegetarian or vegan Not suitable. It’s made with beef.
Halal Wendy’s US beef isn’t advertised as halal certified. See Does Wendy’s Have Halal Options?
Watching sodium Current sodium isn’t confirmed. Older figures put a small near 900 mg, so check the app’s nutrition calculator.
Avoiding added glutamates MSG isn’t named in the list we found, but yeast extract and flavor enhancing ingredients (disodium inosinate and guanylate) are.

🍟 What People Order With It

Wendy’s names four pairings on its chili page, and the first is the one customers actually order most:

🍔 Dave’s Single
Most ordered chili combo, per Wendy’s
🥔 Baked Potato
The cold day pairing
🍟 Hot & Crispy Fries
For dipping
🌶️ Spicy Nuggets
For extra heat

Building a combo? Our Dave’s Combo guide breaks down the burger side of that pairing.

🥣 Does Wendy’s Have a Family Size Chili?

At select locations, yes. Wendy’s says to check the app for your nearest restaurant to see whether it’s offered, so don’t assume your local Wendy’s has it. A family size order is the big container version of the same chili, and it’s priced like it. We cover how it compares with the rest of the menu in What’s the Most Expensive Item on Wendy’s Menu?

What We Checked (and What We Couldn’t)

Checked directly: Wendy’s own chili page (published February 26, 2026) for the description, calorie and protein figures, serving volume, state rankings, pairings and family size availability.

Checked via secondary sources: the ingredient list (a regional Wendy’s site and a recipe site quoting Wendy’s US site, which agree with each other); fat and carb grams (a third party nutrition database); and the leftover burger history (Dave Thomas’s Dave’s Way as quoted by Chowhound, plus reporting from Daily Meal and Mashed).

Couldn’t verify: current sodium and fiber, how long patties are held, and what share of the chili beef is repurposed. We left those out rather than guess.
